Playing In Every Mode with ONE Tiny Scale Shape
Instead of learning thousands of scale shapes, why not just learn how to use the ones you already have? In this lesson, I'll be demonstrating how one tiny little scale shape can be wielded with infinite power to create all 7 different modal tonalities. Hopefully this helps you all realize that whatever scale shapes you've learned are totally usable for any sort of modal playing. You just have to really understand the idea of modal tonality.
The FASTEST Way To Learn MODES
This episode focuses on the essential elements of the Modes of the Major Scale. I discuss how they are constructed and how to use them in Composing and Improvising.
Demonstrating The Modes of Harmonic Minor
The modes of harmonic minor are seldom explored and often misunderstood, but they contain an entire universe of abstract harmonies. Although the 1st and 5th modes are fairly common, I think more attention should be given to some of the others as they can create truly unique sounds.
How To Use The Mixolydian Mode - Playing With Modes #1
In this video we are going to explore the mixolydian mode. The mixolydian mode belongs to the major box and we will start with getting comfortable with the mixolydian scale shape in the CAGED system. To accomplish that we need to sing and internalize the sounds of the scale. Then, we will start improvising, targeting every note and analyzing how that note feels. This helps us anticipate the sound of the note and establishes a strong connection between our mind and what we are playing. Mix and match different scales systems like CAGED and Three note per string to maximize your melodic options and come up with your own custom shapes. Once we finished this exploration phase we need to concentrate in the musicality aspect. For this, put you guitar down and start singing then, translate that to your guitar. The other thing you can do is adding rhythm to your story inspired by actual speaking phrases. Finally, use the knowledge you previously acquired to enrich your improvisations with concepts like playing the arpeggios over the major scale, using the pentatonic scales "hidden" in the modes and incorporating the minor pentatonic scale over a mixolydian backing track.
